Virtual assistants built on Azure Open AI will help the Italian State Printing Institute and Mint to verify a range of ‘Made in Italy’ goods like Prosecco DOC

Microsoft is working with the Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano (the Italian State Printing Institute and Mint) to develop a virtual assistant that can verify the authenticity of Italian products.

As part of the joint pilot project, Microsoft and the institute are developing a generative artificial intelligence chatbot, built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI and with access to the institute’s proprietary models to scan and analyse products for Consorzio di Tutela della DOC Prosecco (the Consortium for the Protection of the Prosecco DOC). The tool will be able to verify the authenticity of labels through a photo of the state seal. It will also be able to provide detailed information on the origin of the product by scanning the label, as well as its characteristics and recommended pairings.

Microsoft and the institute hope to replicate to tool to authenticate all Made in Italy products in the future.

“The collaboration between Microsoft and the institute launches new digitalisation projects aimed at strengthening the safety and authenticity of Italian products, while promoting innovation and leveraging the latest technologies,” said Vincenzo Esposito, CEO of Microsoft Italy. “We are proud of the first project together to protect a world-famous brand such as that of The Consortium for the Protection of the Prosecco DOC. Thanks to the simplicity of AI, it will be possible to offer consumers the opportunity to know the originality of the product.”
