“Speak up, claim your space, and never let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong” – Anamika Pandey, Head of Marketing Communications at Emirates Park Zoo and Resort shares her journey of blending passion with profession to raise awareness about wildlife conservation while establishing herself as a woman leader in a male-dominated industry.

Merging passion with purpose in wildlife tourism

As a marketing professional, deeply passionate about wildlife tourism and advocating sustainability in the tourism sector, my heart was always drawn to initiatives that had a purpose beyond profit. My career took off in traditional marketing roles, but joining hands with Emirates Park Zoo and Resort as the Marketing lead was a moment where I found the perfect synergy between my expertise and my passion. My role allowed me to go beyond conventional marketing strategies, crafting campaigns that didn’t just attract visitors but also inspired them to become advocates for conservation and sustainability.

Leveraging the power of marketing to redefine perceptions of zoos

Successful wildlife tourism campaigns thrive on a mix of responsible tourism messaging, digital storytelling, and strategic engagement.By integrating educational storytelling, interactive experiences, and digital outreach, I saw the potential of immersive marketing at the zoo bridging the gap between entertainment and awareness. I had the opportunity to share the stories of rescue and rehabilitation efforts carried out by the zoo, helping to shift the perception of zoos from being seen as places of captivity to becoming vital nurturers and protectors of wildlife.

Every campaign was an opportunity to highlight the importance of responsible tourism, wildlife rescue, and environmental stewardship. Through this journey, I realized that marketing, when infused with passion and purpose, has the potential to drive real impact, shape perceptions, and create lasting change, not just for a brand, but for the world we aim to protect.

Forge your own path, own your space

Being a woman in marketing within a traditionally male-dominated industry came with challenges. However, I embraced these challenges as opportunities to prove that leadership is defined by vision and impact, not gender.  I reiterate this to all the women I work with and who are willing to thrive in a male-dominated industry that it isn’t just about proving yourself, it’s about owning your expertise, standing tall, and reshaping the narrative. You will face challenges, you will be underestimated, and you will have moments of doubt. But here’s the truth: resilience, confidence, and unwavering determination will set you apart.

To thrive, you must be thick-skinned yet adaptable, assertive yet strategic, and fearless yet open to learning. The road may be tough, but the impact you create will be worth every challenge. Step in boldly, stay unapologetic, and redefine what leadership looks like.

My two cents: Build your expertise so solidly that your work speaks louder than any bias.
