Elon Musk‘s newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has recently recruited a team of young engineers to spearhead its initiatives. DOGE has recently reported some results in its efforts to re-engineer the US government. Among them is 22-year-old Akash Bobba, an Indian American who graduated from the University of California, Berkeley’s Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology programme, as per Wired.
Impressive resume
Akash Bobba has an impressive resume including internships at Meta, Palantir Technologies, and Bridgewater Associates.
Despite his notable achievements in the tech industry, Bobba’s appointment to DOGE has raised concerns due to his lack of government experience.
Security risk?
Critics argue that entrusting significant governmental responsibilities to individuals without public sector backgrounds could pose security risks and challenges in navigating complex bureaucratic systems.
Top-level security access
Bobba is part of a six-member team within Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), all aged between 19 and 25, who have been granted top-level security clearances.
Their rapid ascent to influential positions within the government has sparked debates about the balance between innovative approaches and the necessity of experience in public administration.
As DOGE continues its mission to modernise government operations, the contributions of Bobba and his peers will be closely monitored to assess the impact of this unconventional approach to public sector reform, the tech magazine added.
Downsizing
The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has launched an aggressive plan to downsize the federal workforce, offering employees eight months’ pay if they resign by the end of February.
So far, more than 40,000 workers — about 2 per cent of the federal civilian workforce — have signed up, with numbers expected to rise before Thursday’s deadline.
Workers can apply with a simple email stating “resign” from their government accounts. The White House estimated that up to 10 per cent of federal employees could take the deal, which excludes defence, law enforcement, and postal workers.
Those who stay risk layoffs as agencies restructure.
